The campaign targets the pervasive Mercator-style projection, a 16th-century navigational aid that remains the default world map in millions of classrooms, on wall posters, and across major digital platforms. While invaluable for straight-line sea navigation, the cylindrical projection grossly distorts landmasses by inflating areas near the poles, such as Greenland and Russia, while visually compressing territories near the equator—most notably Africa.
The resolution, framed around the principles of accurate representation and equitable geographic literacy, encourages member states to “promote the use of map projections that provide a more faithful representation of relative land area, particularly in educational materials and public displays.” It also calls on technology companies to review default projection settings in their mapping and search products. Diplomats and advocates argue that the visual shrinking of Africa is not a trivial technicality but a distortion that reinforces damaging stereotypes. In reality, the African continent is large enough to fit the United States, China, India, Japan, and most of Europe combined. However, it comes with its own aesthetic trade-offs, visually stretching continents into unfamiliar shapes that can still cause confusion.
Tech platforms face a particularly complex engineering challenge. Changing the default projection in a widely used service risks disorienting billions of users accustomed to the traditional visual grid. Any update would likely require a phased rollout alongside educational tooltips to explain the switch, similar to how platforms introduce major user-interface overhauls.
A Political and Cultural Cartographic War
The UN resolution explicitly recognizes that the issue transcends technical mapping. It ties the cartographic shift to broader goals of educational equity, accurate historical narrative, and the decolonization of knowledge. For many post-colonial states, the Mercator map is a lingering artifact of a Eurocentric worldview that placed Europe at the literal and figurative center of the world while shrinking the Global South.

It also asks UN agencies like UNESCO to incorporate accurate cartographic literacy into global education frameworks.
