The decision, backed by a broad coalition of member states, calls on UN agencies, educational bodies, and publishers to adopt alternative map projections that more accurately represent the true land area of continents. It stops short of mandating a single replacement but signals a powerful institutional shift away from a map that critics say embeds colonial-era biases into the collective visual understanding of the world.

The map that shaped our worldview—and got it wrong

First created in 1569 by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator for nautical navigation, the Mercator projection preserves angles and shapes, making it ideal for sea charts. However, to do this it massively enlarges land masses as they near the poles. As a result, Greenland appears comparable in size to Africa, Russia dwarfs the entire continent, and Europe seems oversized relative to the Global South.

In reality, Africa is vast enough to fit the United States, China, India, Japan, Mexico, and much of Europe within its borders. Yet on a standard Mercator map—still ubiquitous in classrooms, newsrooms, and digital platforms like Google Maps—the continent looks disproportionately small, undermining its geographical and geopolitical significance.

“The map became a mental shortcut that subtly reinforced hierarchies of power,” said a senior UN official involved in the discussions. “Rectifying this is not just about cartographic accuracy; it’s about visual justice and the dignity of representation.”

What the UN decision actually means

The General Assembly’s endorsement is not a binding resolution but a formal recommendation that urges governments and international organizations to review and update the maps they use in official publications, school textbooks, and digital interfaces. UN bodies are expected to lead by example, integrating area‑accurate projections such as the Gall‑Peters, Winkel Tripel, or equal‑earth maps into their communications.

The initiative gained momentum after years of campaigning by geographic experts and African nations, who pointed out that the Mercator projection’s ubiquity had real‑world consequences—from skewed perceptions in climate policy negotiations to the under‑representation of equatorial landmasses in global economic discussions. National Geographic and other leading educational publishers had already shifted away from pure Mercator in many materials, and the UN action is expected to accelerate that trend.

No perfect flat map—but better choices

Cartographers caution that no two‑dimensional map can capture a spherical Earth without trade‑offs. Some projections preserve area but warp shapes; others maintain direction at the cost of distances. The Mercator’s essential flaw—inflating the poles while compressing the equator—is now widely acknowledged as a poor compromise for general‑purpose world maps.

“What we are saying is: be intentional about the map you choose,” explained Dr. Ngozi Okonjo‑Iweala, a geography education specialist advising the UN process. “If we want to show the true relative sizes of nations, we have excellent modern alternatives. If we need navigation, use Mercator—but label it as such. The problem was the unthinking default.”

Several African education ministries have already announced plans to update textbook standards in the next fiscal cycle.

From classrooms to silicon valley

Digital platforms present both a challenge and an opportunity. Mapping services like Google Earth and Zoom Earth already allow users to toggle diverse projections, but many embedded web maps still default to variants of Mercator. The UN’s move may intensify pressure on technology companies to offer more varied and equitable views. “The shift at the United Nations is a signal that the global community no longer accepts a cartographic narrative that literally diminishes some of its most populous and resource‑rich regions,” said a spokesperson for the International Cartographic Association.
