The analysis from Affordable Contractors Insurance highlights how expanding data center infrastructure—driven by the race to build and power AI systems—is reshaping the skilled trades landscape across the United States, with Washington state standing out as the leader in this emerging employment trend.
“The AI revolution isn’t just happening in server rooms and coding bootcamps,” the study suggests. “It’s pouring concrete, pulling cable, and installing cooling systems. The physical backbone of AI is creating a new class of high-demand trade jobs, and Washington is at the center of it.”
The trades fueling AI’s physical expansion
The occupations seeing the strongest demand are not software roles but hands-on, physical trade positions essential to building, powering, cooling, and maintaining the massive data centers that house AI workloads. The study points to four key areas where job openings are multiplying:
