The U.S. Department of Energy has launched a new workforce development effort aimed at building a specialized talent pipeline from prospecting and extraction through advanced critical-technology sectors. The program, called PROSPECT, is designed to close skills gaps that the department says threaten domestic energy supply chains and broader national security.
PROSPECT stands for “Providing Opportunities for Specialized Education in Critical Technologies.” It is housed within the DOEs Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation and was presented as a direct response to the workforce needs tied to critical minerals, materials, and the technologies they enable.
“Every energy-related supply chain begins with a prospector—someone who…” the department states on the new PROSPECT initiative page, underscoring the foundational role of upstream skills even in a highly modern, electrified energy economy.
Building the skills pipeline from the ground up
