A humanoid robot developed by Chinese smartphone maker Honor sprinted 100 meters in 9.32 seconds during a controlled test run, according to a report from China’s state broadcaster on Saturday. The time would shatter the men’s 100-meter world record of 9.58 seconds set by Usain Bolt in 2009 — but the feat remains a demonstration of engineering rather than an athletic contest.
Named “Lightning,” the bipedal machine was filmed completing the straight-line dash on what appeared to be an indoor track. The state broadcaster offered few details about the testing environment, measurement protocols, or whether the time was independently verified. Honor has not yet publicly released technical specifications for the robot.
A Consumer-Tech Giant Steps Into Advanced Robotics
Honor, best known for its mid-range and flagship smartphones, has quietly expanded its research into AI and robotics. While the company has not announced a dedicated robotics division, the Lightning prototype appears to be part of a broader push among Chinese consumer-electronics firms to explore humanoid machines. Rival Xiaomi previously unveiled its own humanoid robot, CyberOne, and a wave of startups has drawn significant state support.
Analysts note that the demonstration aligns with China’s national strategy to lead in next-generation artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing. Humanoid robots are seen as platforms for breakthroughs in motion control, real-time perception, and battery efficiency — technologies that can spill over into smartphones, wearables, and industrial automation.
Framing the Speed: Robot vs. Human Sprints Are Not Equivalent
While the 9.32-second mark is eye-popping, directly comparing a bipedal robot’s time to a human sprinter’s record is misleading. Human athletes must start from a crouch, react to a gun, and propel themselves using muscle power alone. Robots, by contrast, can be programmed for an ideal stride pattern, use precise motor torque, and may begin moving instantly from an upright stance. The Lightning demo likely ignored standard track and field rules — no false-start detection, no wind measurement, and no anti-doping constraints apply to machines.
“It’s a stunt that grabs attention, but sprinting is about much more than top speed — it’s about the entire neuromuscular system of a human body,” said a sports biomechanics researcher who was not involved in the project. “A robot on a flat surface is solving a different problem.”

The lack of independent certification leaves open several questions. What surface was used? Was the distance laser-measured? Did the robot maintain its own balance, or was it tethered? Was the timing fully automatic? China’s state media has a history of promoting technological achievements with limited transparency, and Honor has yet to respond to requests for comment from international outlets.
The run evokes a 2022 demonstration by Oregon-based Agility Robotics, whose bipedal robot Cassie completed a 100-meter dash in 24.73 seconds — far slower, but achieved outdoors with a running start. Lightning’s reported time would be revolutionary only if the conditions match or exceed those of a regulated race.

Regardless of the caveats, the video of Lightning’s sprint has sparked intense conversation on social media about the future of human-robot competition. Some suggest that a new category of robotic athletics — complete with standardized rules — could soon emerge, similar to the evolution of drone racing.
