The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has issued a stark warning about the worsening electricity supply situation at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), Europe’s largest nuclear facility. In its latest update, Update 361, the agency highlights a recent rise in off-site power losses, exposing the extreme vulnerability of the external grid serving the plant amid the ongoing war.
A Fragile Lifeline for Nuclear Safety
ZNPP requires a continuous and stable supply of electricity from the national grid to run essential safety systems, most critically the pumps that circulate water to cool nuclear fuel in its six reactors. Even though all reactors are currently in cold shutdown, the residual heat and spent fuel still demand constant cooling. Any interruption to that power supply increases the risk of a potential nuclear accident.
The IAEA’s statement underscores that the plant remains “highly dependent on stable external power” for its safe operation.
