UN Adopts Map Projection Correcting Africa’s Distorted Size, US Votes Alone in Opposition
A New Cartographic Standard
The United Nations General Assembly has voted to endorse a new world map projection designed to correct the long-criticized distortion of Africa’s true landmass. The resolution, which passed with overwhelming support, aims to replace traditional projections—most notably the Mercator style—that have for centuries shrunk the perceived size of the continent relative to other regions. In a notable geopolitical twist, the United States was the sole country to vote against the measure.
The Mercator Problem
Many of the maps used in classrooms, media, and navigation today are based on the Mercator projection, first developed in 1569. While it preserves angles for maritime navigation, it dramatically inflates the size of landmasses near the poles. Greenland, for example, appears roughly the size of Africa on a standard Mercator map, but in reality Africa’s area is nearly 14 times larger—30.37 million square kilometers compared to Greenland’s 2.16 million. Similarly, Europe and North America are visually exaggerated, reinforcing outdated colonial-era perspectives on global power.
The newly adopted projection, whose specific mathematical formula is expected to be released by the UN’s geospatial working group, renders areas in their correct proportion. This means Africa stretches across a much wider swath of the map, visibly rivalling the combined size of China, the United States, India, and most of Europe—a fact that often surprises those accustomed to traditional atlases.
A Landmark Vote
On the floor of the General Assembly, supporters framed the move as both a scientific correction and a symbolic step toward decolonizing cartography. “For too long, our students have looked at maps that minimize the physical reality of an entire continent,” a delegate from an African Union member state said during debate. “This endorsement signals that the world is ready to see itself more accurately.”
The United States’ opposition drew immediate attention. Diplomats explained that the U.S. did not object to geographical accuracy itself but to what it viewed as an unnecessary politicization of a technical standard. “Map projections are tools, not political statements,” a U.S. spokesperson said. “We support educational efforts but believe this should remain outside the General Assembly’s purview.” Critics, however, pointed out that maps have always been political instruments, shaped by the interests of those who drew them.
Symbolic or Binding?
The resolution is largely symbolic: it encourages member states, international organizations, and educational institutions to adopt the new projection in textbooks, digital platforms, and official cartography. It does not impose any legal obligation, nor does it replace navigation charts that rely on Mercator for maritime safety. However, given the UN’s influence, its endorsement is expected to accelerate a shift already underway in geographic education and global mapping initiatives, including those run by National Geographic and various UN agencies.
Cartographers welcomed the decision. Dr. Eunice Wambui, a Nairobi-based geospatial researcher, described the UN’s move as “long overdue.” She said, “Every time a child sees a map that makes Africa look small, it plants a subtle seed about the continent’s importance. Correcting that is not just about math; it’s about dignity.”
Broader Implications
The vote taps into a larger, decades-old conversation about representation in cartography. The Gall-Peters projection, introduced in the 1970s, was an early attempt to show continents in their correct proportions, but it was criticized for distorting shapes. More harmonious equal-area projections have since been developed, and the UN-backed version is reportedly a refined iteration that balances area fidelity with minimal shape distortion.
For African nations, the map’s new status marks a moment of recognition. The continent is home to 54 countries, over a billion people, and vast natural resources—realities too often eclipsed by depictions that literally shrink it. As one South African educator put it, “When our own people see the continent as it truly is, they begin to understand our collective strength.”
The United States’ isolated vote may signal lingering discomfort with multilateral efforts that revisit colonial legacies, or it may simply reflect a stubborn attachment to the cartographic status quo. Either way, the decision ensures that future maps will be more truthful about the world’s second-largest continent.
