Hedge fund leaders, who stand among AI’s primary beneficiaries, have been unusually candid. In private meetings and public forums, some have cautioned that unless the technology is governed wisely, the backlash could be severe—eroding trust in institutions and destabilizing the very markets on which their fortunes depend.

Recent analyses and warnings from senior economists and major investors indicate that the technology, far from being a broad-based prosperity engine, is accelerating the concentration of wealth and opportunity in the hands of those who already hold them. The Owners vs. the Workers

At the core of the dynamic is a stark divergence: AI boosts productivity and profits for the companies and investors that own and deploy it, while often squeezing the wages and job security of workers whose roles can be automated. Some voices are even calling for a more radical rethinking—such as an AI dividend paid to citizens from the taxes on AI-generated profits, or mandatory worker representation on boards of companies that use AI extensively. Without such measures, economists warn, AI could become not just a driver of productivity but an engine of division—sharpening the fault lines between asset owners and workers, between superstar cities and the rest of the country.
