The Labour-Arbitrage Engine Under Pressure
India’s IT sector has long been an export powerhouse, built on scaling human labour to handle software maintenance, application support, testing and infrastructure management for global clients. As enterprise clients adopt their own AI platforms, the volume of outsourced work could shrink. Indian IT companies may use AI to boost productivity and shorten turnaround times without expanding headcount at historical rates. For mid-level professionals and fresh graduates, the consequences could include fewer entry-level openings, flatter career ladders and a sharp pivot in skill demand away from commoditised coding towards higher-order AI engineering and consulting.

The industry body NASSCOM has acknowledged the need for large-scale reskilling, but the pace of change may outstrip the workforce’s ability to adapt. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is trying to shape a policy framework for AI that balances innovation with employment safeguards, though concrete protections remain largely aspirational.
